‘Mom’ to End With Season 8

Mom is coming to an end at CBS. The sitcom will wrap up for good later this year with the end of Season 8, Variety reports. The news comes after series star Anna Farris abruptly left the show in September ahead of the latest season, citing her desire to explore new opportunities outside of Mom. Now, Mom will end its eight-season run on CBS this May with the series finale. The latest season of the sitcom, which stars Allison Janney as Bonnie, explains the absence of Farris’ character Christy by sending her off the law school at Georgetown.

Executive producers Chuck Lorre, Gemma Baker and Nick Bakay released a joint statement today addressing the end of their show, which first premiered on CBS in 2013. “For the past eight years, we’ve had the great honor to bring these wonderful characters to life, sharing their struggles and triumphs with millions of viewers every week,” they said. “From the beginning, we set out to tell stories about recovery from alcoholism and addiction that are rarely portrayed in a network comedy series.

“Whether it was the emotional reactions of the live audience on tape night inside Stage 20, or discussions at The White House regarding the opioid crisis, or the personal stories we continue to receive on social media, we take great pride in knowing Mom has positively impacted so many lives,” they continued. “We are forever grateful to our brilliant cast and guest stars, wonderful writers, and amazing crew for going on this journey with us.”

Mom, which originally starred Janney and Farris as a mother-daughter duo both working to maintain their sobriety, also features costars Jaime Pressly, Mimi Kennedy, Beth Hall, Kristen Johnston and William Fichtner. The series won Janney multiple Emmys over the years and pulled in an impressive audience, becoming the third highest-rated comedy on broadcast TV in the U.S.

“Since its premiere, Mom has touched people’s lives by sensitively tackling weighty yet relatable topics, with a perfect, deft touch,” Kelly Kahl, president of CBS Entertainment, said. “Mom redefined what a comedy can be, and we are proud to have been the network home to this wonderful series. We are deeply grateful to Chuck Lorre and his tremendously creative production team, helmed by Gemma Baker and Nick Bakay, and the amazingly talented cast, led by the phenomenal Allison Janney.”

After Farris exited Mom this past Fall, Janney has been keeping fans updated on the series and what the set is like without one of its main stars. Just this week, she shared an update about filming Season 8, which she said has been “very odd” without Farris. “She’s very missed. Anna is missed and her character on the show is missed,” she told Ellen Show host Ellen DeGeneres, adding, “People love the show, so we’re going to keep telling the stories as long as we can.”

Mom airs Thursdays at 9/8c on CBS.
